Obituary for Deacon Willie Paul Evans
Mrs. Lela Evans of Roanoke, and family, announces with deepest regret, the homegoing of Mr. Willie Paul Evans. Read his full obituary and view funeral arrangements below.
Deacon Willie Paul Evans was born on October 26, 1955, in Franklin, Heard County, Georgia, to the late Lonnie B. Evans and the late Sara Lee McClendon Evans. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Stephanie Evans.
At an early age, Willie Paul accepted Christ and joined Mount Carrie Baptist Church in Franklin, Georgia. After relocating, he united with Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Five Points, Alabama, where he served faithfully as a member of the Deacon Board until his passing.
A proud graduate of Handley High School, Class of 1973, Willie Paul continued to pursue life with diligence and devotion. He later served in the Army National Guard and was known for his many talents, particularly his love of working on cars. Throughout his life, he held a variety of jobs, including years of service at Amoco, Wehadkee Yarn Mills, and Yellow Dirt, as well as working as a skilled mechanic.
Paul, as he was affectionately called, spent about 20 years residing in California before returning home to Roanoke, Alabama, where he has lived for the past 25 years. He enjoyed football, westerns, and watching the news. Above all, he cherished time with family and friends, sharing laughter, stories, and companionship. His circle of close friends included Larry Tucker, Charles Huffman, Richard Billingsley, George Slay, Jr., Leonard Holliday, and many others.
On September 19, 2025, at the age of 69, Deacon Willie Paul Evans answered the Master’s call at Tanner Health.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife of 18 years, Mrs. Lela Evans of Roanoke, Alabama; two stepdaughters, Maria Walker (John) of Denver, Colorado, and Linda Jean Woods of LaGrange, Georgia; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Emily Ann Watts of Roanoke and Sherry Moreland (Bobby) of LaGrange, Georgia; four brothers-in-law, Leroy Dean of Abbotsford, Georgia, Eddie Snells (Reginia) of Roanoke, Curtis Snells (Ann) of Lanett, Alabama, and Willie Callaway of LaGrange, Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
