Reverend Trammell Obituary

With deepest sympathy, we regret to announce the passing from this life, of Chambers County native, Reverend Leonard E. Trammell age 78, a long-time resident of 518 Strozier Street, Roanoke, Randolph County Alabama 36274.

Reverend Trammell transitioned from this life during the early morning hours of Monday morning, March 16, 2015 at West Georgia Medical Center in Roanoke.

Public viewing and visiting hours for the Reverend Trammell will be observed on Friday, March 20, 2015, after 12:00 Noon, here at the Funeral Home.

Funeral Services for Reverend Trammell will be observed on Saturday, March 21, 2015, at 1:00 PM from The New Harmony Baptist Church, 7419 County Road 158, LaFayette AL 36862 with the Pastor, Reverend Doug Jones, Officiating, joined by Moderator Reverend Dr. Melvin Owns, Eulogist, Reverend Dr. H.L. Jones, Reverend William Phillips, and Reverend Ricky Cofield.

Serving as Pall Bearers will be Nephews; and serving as Flower Attendants will be Ministers' Wives.

Burial will follow in the adjoining Cemetery at New Harmony Missionary Baptist Church, LaFayette.

The Obituary

Leonard E. Trammell was one of nine children, born in Chambers County, Alabama on June 26, 1936 to the parentage of the late Adolphus and Mae Bell Turner Trammell.

At an early age, Leonard joined the New Harmony Baptist Church, where he was active in all areas of the church and remained faithful to New Harmony Baptist Church until he answered God's recent call from labor to reward. At New Harmony Baptist Church, he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board; Reverend Trammell was became fond of the word of God, and developed a very strong affinity to the Sunday School program. Thus as he grew in his knowledge of the word, he served as Sunday School Teacher as well.

He was married to the love of his life, Mrs. Annie D. Williams. Their love blossomed into a large loving family of one son, and six daughters.

Ben stood out in the community as an industrious, loving husband, father and man of God. Throughout life, he busied himself by holding down many jobs, including: The Dietary Department of Randolph County Hospital, Coca Cola Company, Miliken Textile Mills, Candlewick Yarns, Amoco Fabrics and Fibers, several Stores in the area including Fred's, Ben Franklin, Spectrum and Winn Dixie. He retired after many years of service as a Mechanic, Spinning and Yarn Manufacturing worker, and after retirement, he continued to work as a security officer at Mohawk Industries in Roanoke. He also served on the Board of Directors of Fort McClellan Credit Union for 10 years.

Fondly known as "Ben" by all his closest friends and loved ones, he devoted years as a "Radio Angel" at Eagle 102.3 FM radio station, where on the weekends, he presented hours of inspirational music, and talk on his "My Friend Ben" radio program. People far and near were inspired by his radio program. He was the first black Licensed DeeJay, and was on the air for 27 years. Leonard later accepted the calling on his life, to enter the Christian Ministry.

Leonard was preceded in death by three brothers Lawson Trammell, Calvin Trammell, and most recently his brother Odell Trammell; and one sister, Lena Mae Trammell.

During the early morning hours of March 16, 2015, Reverend Leonard Trammell embarked on a journey with the divine, leaving behind this mortal world, destined for eternal peace. He was at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Georgia.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend family man, and respected member of our community, Leonard E. Trammell was loved, supported, and will be deeply missed by many, but none more than those closest to him with whom he journeyed through life. They include his devoted wife, Mrs. Annie D. Trammell of Roanoke, Alabama; his son, Lawrence Trammell (Jamesia) of Prattville, Alabama; six (6) daughters: Linda Johnson (Steven) of Hackensack, New Jersey, Kathy Seymour, Shirley Rowland (Kenneth), Tammy Watkins, and Greta Bailey all of Roanoke, Alabama, and Mary Joyce Marable of LaGrange, Georgia; two (2) brothers: Reverend William H. Trammell, and Adolphus Trammell (Melmer) of Roanoke, Alabama; and two (2) sisters: Bernice Trammell and Dora Hilliard, both of Elyria, Ohio; two (2) sisters-in-law: Pearl Trammell and Doris Trammell of Roanoke, Alabama; Reverend Leonard E. Trammell is further survived by twenty-five (25) grandchildren; thirty-five (35) great grandchildren; two (2) great great grandchildren; a large number of nieces and nephews, and many other loving cousins, neighbors and friends.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to every family member, individual and group, who has reached out to them during these most difficult hours of bereavement.
