Hightlights Of Her Life

Surely, heaven rejoiced as our mother was welcomed in! But, with sadness and much reluctance, we released her back into the hands of God on Wednesday morning, October 17, 2012 around 4:45 am eastern time, as she turned away from mortality and toward immortality.

Texanna Marable Royston is the daughter of the late George and Ellie (Starks) Marable, who parented a large loving family of seven children. She grew up in the Broughton Community, moving to Roanoke after her marriage to the late Mayfield Royston, Sr. in 1947. Texanna and Mayfield, Sr., enjoyed many years of wedded bliss, including the birth of their three children, Patricia, Kathy and Mayfield, Jr. She planted herself deeply into the soil of the Roanoke community, where she continued to practice her faith as a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, and use both her personal charm and her intelligence to touch young and old throughout this community.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mayfield Royston, Sr., (1991); two sisters: Gladys Hamilton and Agnes Wright; and three brothers: Overton, Rufus and Julius T. (Trent) Marable.

Texanna Marable was born March 21, 1923 in Randolph County, Alabama; Early in life, she joined Rocky Mount Methodist Church in Broughton, where she also attended elementary school. She completed her high school education at Randolph County Training School graduating with the class of 1942, and furthered her education at Southern Union State Community College, and Alabama State University, in Montgomery.

She worked for several years for the Randolph County Schools, and for the Community Action Agency. Her life was devoted to working with the young... as a public school teacher, a Head Start Teacher, in later years, a Substitute Teacher, and a Sunday School teacher; and she had a very great influence on young people.

Mrs. Royston was a very active member of the community, who had a strong penchant for serving others through volunteerism. She served as a Pink Lady at Randolph County Hospital over the years. She was also a Hospice Volunteer. She was a community activist, working with the NAACP, and the Alabama Democratic Conference (ADC). In September of 1967, she was quoted in a newspaper article that appeared in The Southern Courier, when she advocated for a Truancy Officer for black children attending Randolph County Schools. She was concerned about children not attending school.

For a number of years, she served this voting district as a poll worker -- one of the very first African Americans to be appointed. She also served for a period of time as the East Roanoke reporter for the Roanoke Leader. She was socially active through her membership in the Southside Progressive Club, a civic and social club comprised of community women who performed many kind deeds to individuals, families and businesses in this area. And from time to time she enjoyed working in McGilvary's, an upscale women's clothing store that operated in Roanoke for many years. Mrs. Royston was a zealous member and officer of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Roanoke, where she dedicated her life serving in many capacities: Trustee, Church Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Supervisor, working with the Parish Food Ministry where she distributed food by the box-fulls to those in need and last but certainly not least, President of The United Methodist Women.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend and most elegant, poised, admired, and respected woman of the community, Texanna Marable Royston was loved, supported, and will be deeply missed by many, but none more than her son, Mayfield Royston, Jr. (Debra), and two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Poole (Reginald) of Riverdale, Georgia and Mrs. Kathy Pate (Ronald) of Roanoke, Alabama; three grandchildren: Naomi Texanna Pate of Atlanta, Georgia, Robert M. Royston and Marian A. Royston both of Auburn, Alabama; one brother, Horace Marable of Atlanta, Georgia; three special nieces: Judy Cooper, Carolyn Bright, and Marjorie Carter; many more loving nieces and nephews; and special cousins: Mrs. Countess Chapman and Mrs. Sallie Finch; special friends: Mrs. Marie Heflin, Mrs. Barbara Watkins, and Mrs. Louise Bell all of Roanoke, Alabama; and finally, a long list of loving neighbors, church family, and comrades who are going to miss her deeply.

Nephews and Friends of the family will serve as Active Pall Bearers, including: Calvin Marable, Michael Wright, Michael Joiner, Michael Holley, William Ware, Keith Marable, Chris Marable and William Foster, Frederick Lovett.

Honorary Pall Bearers will include: Julius Shealey, George Morgan, Bobby Mack Morgan, Bill Hamilton, and Vernon Marable.

Flower Attendants will include United Methodist Women and friends of the family.
