Mrs. Ruby Lee Stegall, age 85, a native and life-long resident of Roanoke, residing at 1235 Yancey Street, passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Wedowee Hospital, in Wedowee, Alabama.
Public Visitation hours will be observed on Sunday, October 27, 2013 between the hours of 1:00 Noon and 6:00 PM.
The Home Going Service for the late Ms. Stegall will be observed on Monday, October 28, 2013 at 1:00 O'Clock from the Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church, 1465 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Roanoke, Alabama, with Reverend L. B. Houston, Pastor, officiating. Mrs. Stegall will be in state at the church one hour prior to the services on Monday.
Burial will follow in Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church Cemetery.
The Obituary
Ruby Lee Whitlow Stegall was the first born child of Jesse Lee (Toad) Whitlow and Cleola (Mz. Clee) Huguley Whitlow on September 28, 1928, in LaFayette Alabama, Chambers County. She was called by God to her spiritual home on October 23, 2013.
She was reared by Jessie and Cleola Whitlow along with 11 siblings (6 boys and 5 girls) all who preceded her in death except three brothers: Charles Whitlow of LaFayette, Alabama, Marvin Lewis Whitlow (Ethel) of Decatur Georgia, and Willie Edward Whitlow of Atlanta, Georgia; and one sister Mae Rene Whitlow Greer of LaFayette, Alabama and one dear friend/cousin from childhood, Beatrice Pickney of Gadsden, Alabama.
She attended school in Chambers County, and joined the Red Hill Baptist Church as a young child under the leadership of Reverend Sheddrick. She also worshipped for periods at Sardis Baptist Church, White Hall Baptist Church and as an adult she joined the Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church under leadership of Reverend Magby. She was active with the Usher Board, and served as President for many years, a member of the Mission Board and was active attending and representing Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church as a delegate at associations, district meeting and supporting other churches and their special programs. She was a faithful member, continuing Christian work and service in the church praising and
worshipping until her health failed her.
She was married to Emzix Stegall in 1951, raising a family in Roanoke, Alabama until his death on February 26, 1970. She was preceded in death by one son, Willie Joe Stegall in June, 1979, and one daughter Mary Ella Stegall Berry in April, 1992.
She was employed at Royston’s Dairy for 5 years; Longshore Dairy 5 years; worked Private Home Duty for many years, Rosser Nursing Home for 10 years, and retired from AMOCO Fabrics and Fibers Roanoke Mills, Roanoke Alabama after 15 years of services.
She resided at Traylor Retirement Community since 2003, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s where she was cared for so patiently and properly fighting the terrible debilitating illness of dementia. But, she triumphed over her illness on October 23, 2013,
She impacted so many lives during her lifetime with her kindred spirit, firmness, affection, sharing/giving attitude and willingness to help and listen to others that she gained the love, respect and appreciation of all who came in contact with her and people who knew her continued to visit and call to inquire about her.when God mercifully summoned her home. She was at Wedowee Hospital, in Wedowee.
She leaves to mourn her passing one son, Karry Anthony Stegall of Roanoke, Alabama; three (3) daughters: Jacquelyn Wright Peel (Leonard of Dallas, Texas, Betsy Lee Stegall Bryant of Roanoke, Alabama, and Ruby Nell Stegall Glenn (Gary) of LaGrange, Georgia; twenty-three (23) grandchildren; fifty-two (52) great grandchildren; twelve (12) great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
