In Loving Memory Of Mrs. Marianne (Harp) Jordan

Beloved and admired throughout the community, Mrs. Marianne (Harp) Jordan was the last surviving sibling of seven (7) children born to the parentage of the late Mr. and Mrs. Rufus and Cora (Glover) Harp natives of Arlington, Calhoun County, Georgia. She was born in Albany, Dougherty County, Georgia on June 9, 1947.

Marianne attended Monroe Comprehensive High School where she enjoyed being on the cheerleading squad. She went on to attend Shelby State Community College, Albany State University, and completed her education at Memphis State University in Memphis, Tennessee.

While residing in Albany, she met a career soldier, William Heflin Jordan a Roanoke native whom we know as “Billy”. On August 11, 1983, they were married at the Courthouse in Albany. Years later, William would surprise his beloved wife with a “real” wedding with all the trimmings. Her college education spawned into a life-long career in the Social Service field, taking her to three states, Georgia, North Carolina, and Alabama, where she oversaw the Child Support Enforcement Unit of Department Of Human Resources. For at least ten of those years, Marianne simultaneously supervised both the Carroll County and Coweta County Departments of Human Resources.

In 1993, she and her husband migrated from Jacksonville, North Carolina to Roanoke, Alabama, settling on the Jordan family homestead, where they filled their retirement years with service to their community and church family. Marianne had a zeal for volunteerism. So, they joined Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in the Welch Community, where she served as a member of the choir, trustee board, Sunday school teacher, and worked with the Nursing Home Ministry. She also helped many young adults in need by using her home as a safe harbor for those waiting to be admitted to drug treatment facilities. She served on the Hospital Board, President of the Roanoke City Board Of Education, and finally an appointee to the DHR Board for Randolph County, where she also served as President.

Her husband and children revere her for having a stern, no-nonesense – but loving-- manner, and carrying herself as a virtuous woman who commanded the respect of all.

Marianne was preceded in death by both parents; two brothers, four sisters; three sisters-in-law, and two brothers-in-law. Having served above and beyond the call of duty, God in his lovingkindness and mercy, admitted her into his presence, and closed her eyes on January 27, 2018. She was at the University Of Alabama Medical Center, in Birmingham, Alabama.

She leaves to cherish many loving memories her husband of thirty-five years, Mr. William H. Jordan or Roanoke, Alabama; four (4) sons: Thelvie Winston (Carla) of Atlanta, Georgia, Mario Jordan (Katrina) of Macon, Georgia, Walter Warren Gaddy (Amie) of Roanoke, Alabama and DeCarlo Jordan (Elaine) of Atlanta, Georgia; four (4) daughters: Bernita Banks, Lisa L. Banks, and Demetria Boyd (Jerrold) all of Atlanta, Georgia and Zanita Mitchell of Richmond, Virginia; three (3) brothers-in-law: George Jordan (Elaine) of Jacksonville, Florida, Lorenzo Jordan (Anna) of Anaheim, California, and James Jordan (Robin) of Lineville, Alabama. two (2) sisters-in-law: Gloria Jean Sadler (Aldren) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Charis Jordan of Youngstown, Ohio; twenty (20) grandchildren; five (5) great grandchildren; and a great host of other loving relatives and friends.
