In Loving Memory Of Jimmie Dora Grier

Jimmie Dora Heflin was one of nine (9) siblings born to the parentage of the late Jim and Idora (Fuller) Heflin. She was born February 25, 1930. Her family of origin included brothers: Buddy, Ben, Robert Lee and Tom; and sisters: Darlena, Lema Ruth, Annie Lois, and Ida, the last surviving sibling.

At an early age, their father, Reverend Jim Heflin, a Baptist preacher, introduced his children to the Christian way of life, in the Baptist Church. However, as a young adult Jimmie was introduced to Holiness as a way of life, and compelled by the Holy Spirit, she joined the body of believers at the East Roanoke Church of God, under Elder Wade Wright, Sr., who founded the Pentecostal Church in Roanoke.

On February 2, 1969, she found the love of her life in the late Willie Clifford Grier. They were married at East Roanoke Church Of God in Roanoke. Their union was blessed by the birth of one child -- a son whom they named Willie Wilfred Grier.

During her young adult years, she encountered the same racial barriers as many others -- desiring to work, but obstructed by a chronic absence of employment opportunities for black workers... yet she was determined to work to make a living; and so as a young adult, Jimmie and her sisters would often travel to Cobb County, Georgia, where she found work as a housekeeper. She did this work for many years, and made a loving home for herself and her family.

Jimmie was a beloved and highly respected member of the East Roanoke Pure Holiness Church Of God probably for well over sixty years. It was here that she worked out her soul salvation, serving and working in the church over the years... in many areas: as church pianist, Sunday School Teacher; pianist for the choir; Vacation Bible School Teacher, Sunday School Teacher and serving in many other capacities. She was loved by all, and respected as a faithful servant of God. She was the oldest mother in the church, and the last of three generations who remained with the church since its founding. It was evident that she lived a dedicated, consecrated life, as she could always be seen coming and going -- in and out of her church, where she worked until she became too feeble to continue at her previous level of service.

On Friday morning, March 16, 2018, having worked till the close of the day, Jimmie closed her eyes and obediently transitioned from the trials and tribulations of mortal life into the sweet peace of eternal sleep. She was at the home of her son, Wilfred on Price Street in Roanoke.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to Mrs. Grier's entire family, which includes her only son, Wilfred Grier (Vivian) of Roanoke, Alabama; four grandchildren: Dakota Grier and Ashley Fanning both of Roanoke, Alabama, Michael Fanning of Texas, and Candice Fanning of Norfolk, Virginia; two great grandchildren: Malaysia Grier and Diamond Foster; one sister, Ida Houston (Nathan) of New York, New York; and finally but not least, many many loving nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.
