THE OBITUARY

"Mr. Roosevelt Ware was an important historical link to an important part of our history; the son of a father who lived to be 106 and the grandson of an enslaved African American. We must use every opportunity, especially the passing of our elders, to teach and unveil the history of our families and the African American community.”
Dr. Alvin L. Thornton

Mr. Roosevelt Ware was born April 13, 1926, to the parentage of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley and Lucy Ware.

From historical records, we know that John Wesley Ware was born in parts of Georgia, 1862 — according to the 1920 census — just 3 years before the Emancipation of slaves in America by President Abraham Lincoln. John Wesley was living in Randolph County in 1940 when he was 76 years old; and by then, he was a widower. So, we know from that information that Roosevelt lost his mother, Lucy, when he was a fairly young man. There was a brother named Grady, and four sisters mentioned in connection with Roosevelt: Delia, Annie Laura, Rosie Mae and Sally Ruth.

We also know from oral history, that Roosevelt’s father had the distinction of living to be 106 years old.

For many years, Roosevelt worked as a dishwasher at the hospital in Roanoke, and he was also very well known for doing yard work. He has been well known around our community, and who showed himself friendly to everyone he met, and loved everybody.

Mr. Roosevelt Ware was preceded in death by at least (2) sisters that we know of: Mrs. Annie Laura Ware McCormick (James) who died November 2, 2002 in Atlanta, Georgia, and Rosie Mae Foster.. He completed his life’s journey on Monday, December 16, 2013 concluding an 87-year walk with God. He was at the Wedowee Hospital in Wedowee, Alabama.

Roosevelt is survived by: his only (1) son, Ferris Howard of Atlanta, Georgia; two (2) step-sons: Michael Wood (Priscilla) and Baine Wood (Helen), both of Roanoke, Alabama; five (5) step-daughters: Agatha Baggin, Agnes Paige, Debbie Evans, Yolanda Foster, and Rosie Mae Foster all of Roanoke, Alabama; one (1) brother, Grady Ware of Alexander City, Alabama; and one (1) sister, Sally Ruth Slay of LaGrange, Georgia; two (2) granddaughters, Carrie Capeland (Curtis) of LaGrange, Georgia; and a very special granddaughter, Lovette Wood of Roanoke, Alabama; three (3) very special friends: Eva Forte Woodgett, Brenda Thompson, and Virgil Harrison all of Roanoke, Alabama; and many loving friends throughout the community.
