Mr. Jeffery Orlando “Dinky” Baker, age 53, a native of the historic East Roanoke Community in Roanoke, Alabama, passed away sadly on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at VistaCare Hospice in Columbus, Georgia.
Public viewing and visiting hours for Mr. Baker will be observed on Thursday, April 25, 2013 from10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Mr. Baker will be in state at the Church one hour prior to funeral services, which will be held Friday, April 26, 2013 at 1:00 O’Clock PM from the East Roanoke Pure Holiness Church, 311 Wright’s Place in Roanoke, Alabama.
Pastor Timothy Wright will officiate, and Bishop Lathonia J. Wright of New Life Worship Center, Roanoke, Alabama will serve as Eulogist. Accompanying the Pastor and Eulogist will be Elder Charles Rowland, Reverend Jeffery Rosser, Pastor William Green, and Bishop Tom Staples.
Nephews and Cousins will serve as Pall Bearers.
Burial will follow in Skyview Memorial Garden’s Cemetery, Welch, Alabama.
The Obituary
Jeffery Baker was born on October 2, 1959 in Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama to the parentage of Grover Baker and Jeanette (Winston) Baker. He is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. William and Minnie Bell Winston who made up an important part of the fabric of the historic East Roanoke Community on what was formerly Riley Street in Roanoke.
“Dinky” grew up in East Roanoke, and attended school at the Randolph County Training School until he went to Handley High School in the tenth grade. He then moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he learned the electrical trade. He stayed there many years before returning to Roanoke to live. He attended the East Roanoke Church of God.
His work history included Franklin Aluminum, Handley Middle School Construction, and Roanoke Stock Yards. One of his favorite pastimes was working in the yard, dancing, and socializing with family and friends.
Dinky was known for making people laugh and a dance he called “the crook”. He liked to have a good time. His hobbies were playing pool, basketball, the drums, and being the family “handy-man”. He was blessed with two children. One daughter, Tuesday Goodwin, preceded him in death.
Jeffery was called home Thursday, April 18, 2013 at VistaCare Hospice in Columbus, Georgia at the age of 53.
He is survived by his only daughter, Sonya Baker, of Phenix City, Alabama; his mother, Jeanette Baker, and father Grover Baker, of Roanoke, Alabama; five (5) brothers: Victor Winston (Sheryll) of Cleveland, Ohio, Wendell Winston (Kathy) of Franklin, Georgia; Darrell Baker (Johnetta) of Hephzibah, Georgia, Leonard Baker (Joyce) of Sharpsburg, Georgia, Calvie Baker of Roanoke, Alabama; and one (1) sister, Lenice Baker-Culberson (Sidney) also of Roanoke, Alabama; one special friend Patsy Winston, and a large extended family including a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and many other loving relatives and friends throughout the community.
