In Loving Memory Of Mr. George Morgan

Mr. George Morgan was born in Chambers County, Alabama on January 25, 1929 to the parentage of the late Mr. and Mrs. Washington Morgan, Sr. and Donnie Finley Morgan. The family church was Saint John Methodist Church in Lafayette, Alabama. The family migrated from Chambers County to Roanoke, Alabama, where they joined the Bethel Methodist Church and became one of the strongest and most supportive families in Bethel.

Growing up in the historic East Roanoke district, George attended and graduated from the Randolph Country Training School with the Class of 1949. That year, George enjoyed the distinction of serving as Class President of his graduating class.

Inducted November 8, 1950, George served our grateful nation during the Korean Theatre of War, and was Honorably discharged on August 11, 1952. During his service he was the recipient of the Korean Services Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, and the United Nations Service Medal.

On the 8th Day of August, 2001, Governor Don Siegelman honored George with The Alabama Korean War Legion Of Honor, which he proudly displayed in his home. The Award reads:

"Don Siegelman Governor of The State of Alabama Has Awarded the Alabama Korean Ware Legion of Honor to George Morgan for Patriotic and Selfless Service to the United States of America and State Of Alabama during the Korean War, June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955. Your personal commitment and sacrifice was instrumental in preserving Freedom's Light and proved once again that Freedom is Not Free."

Given Under my hand this 8th Day of August, 2001. The document was signed by Frank S. Wilkes, Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Don Seigleman, Governor of Alabama, Commander in Chief.

He spent many years in the Atlanta area, where he lived and worked as Director of the Taxi Cab service for Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. Upon his retirement he returned home to Roanoke, Alabama. Upon his return home, where he was still an active member of the Saint John United Methodist Church in Lafayette, but would occasionally visit Bethel here in Roanoke. Encouraged by Mrs. Charlotte Clark-Frieson, George later moved his membership to Bethel United Methodist Church in Roanoke. George came to Bethel at a very critical time, when the Church was without many strong leading men in the Church. He served Bethel faithfully as an Usher, Steward, Trustee, and many other capacities. He was faithful in attendance, and served with humility. He wasn't always HEARD. He wasn't a "noisy" individual; but his presence was certainly seen and felt at Bethel. No matter who came to pastor at Bethel, George was steadfast. At Bethel, he served under Reverend Tommie Finley, Reverend Shannon Alison, and Reverend Anthony Sims, and the current pastor, Reverend Jacquelyn Cumberlander.

George was preceded in death by his parents, six (6) brothers, Washington Morgan, Jr., Clifford Morgan, Raymond (Wayne) Morgan, Forrest Morgan and Eddie Lee Morgan: two (2) sisters, Mrs. Annie Bell Sims, and Mrs. Katie Ruth Whitlow; and a great grandson, Jonathan Xavier Terrell.

George transitioned from this life at his residence in Roanoke, Alabama on Tuesday, April 21, 2015.

Though absent from this mortal body, George is gone for a moment, but will never be forgotten and will live forever in the hearts of his two (2) daughters, Gerlean Morgan Terrell (James) of Lithonia Georgia and Jacqueline Morgan of Decatur, Georgia; his two (2) sisters, Mary Morgan Baker (Eddie) and Sharon Morgan Phillips; and two (2) brothers: John Frank Morgan, and Bobby Morgan; three (3) sisters-in-law, Ester Morgan and Dollie Ruth Morgan both of Roanoke, Alabama and Emma Morgan of Chicago, Illinois; a very special friend, Mrs. Nina Taylor of Roanoke, Alabama; and his good buddy, Mr. W.B. Berry of Five Points, Alabama; five (5) grandchildren; seven (7) great grandchildren; and three (3) great great grandchildren; his church family at Bethel United Methodist Church, and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Our family is very grateful to "Hank" and Ramon Morgan for their care during his illness.
