With deepest regret, we announce the passing from this life of Mr. Emmett T. Johnson, Sr., 77, a resident of 561 5th Street, S.W., Wedowee, Alabama. Mr. Johnson transitioned from this life on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at his residence in Wedowee, concluding an extended illness.
Funeral Services for the late Mr. Johnson will be observed Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Zion Rest Baptist Church, 1647 County Road 213, Wedowee, Alabama 36278. Mr. Johnson will be in state at the church one hour prior to services on Wednesday. Officiating will be the pastor, Reverend William Phillips, and serving as Eulogist will be Reverend Arthur Welch. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery at Zion Rest Batist Church, Wedowee.
Serving as Pall Bearers will be: Devin Johnson, Kevin Myers, Derrick Welch, Brandon Gipson, Jacolby Gipson, Xavier Gibson, Jermaine Sims and Casey Thompson.
Mr. Johnson's Granddaughters will serve as Flower Attendants.
In Loving Memory Of Emmett T. Johnson, Sr.
Mr. Emmett T. Johnson was born in Wedowee, Alabama to the parentage of the late Frank Johnson and Catherine (Robinson) Smith on June 20, 1940.
Emmett grew up and attended public schools here in Randolph County.
On December 27, 1957, at 17 years of age, Emmett enlisted in the United States Armed Forces, where he served our grateful nation both at home and abroad during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam era. While in service, Mr. Johnson trained in Watercraft Operation, Air Frame Repair, Non-Commissioned Officer Academy and Medical Specialist Training. His overseas tours took him to Darmstadt, Germany, and Vietnam. During his tenure serving in the military, he recieved numerous decorations: he earned Five (5) Overseas Service Bars, The Good Conduct Medal, Marksmanship Qualification Badges, M-16, Vietnam Service Medal with 7 Bronze Stars, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm. On October 10, 1969 he recieved the Rank of Staff Sergeant. After serving honorably for 20 years, he retired from Military Service on December 31, 1977 at Fort McClellan, Alabama.
Upon his retirement from the military, he returned to his hometown in Wedowee where he remained a permanent resident. During these retirement years, he frequently engaged in construction work, taking on various construction projects.
He was a member of the Zion Rest Baptist Church in Wedowee, Alabama.
On Ocboer 9, 1995, he united in marriage with Ms. Ilona Holloway of Woodland, Alabama to whom he remained faithfully wed for 20 years.
He departed this life on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at his residence in Wedowee.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ilona Johnson of Wedowee, Alabama; twelve children: Gail Veal (Robert Meek) and Devin Johnson (April) of Pueblo, Colorado, Beverly Welch (Reverend Arthur Welch) of Anniston, Alabama, Emmett Johnson, Jr. and Christopher Johnson (Tiffany) of Roanoke, Alabama, Darrow Johnson and Stacey Boddie (Yolanda) of Douglasville, Georgia, Shaan Thompson of Bowdan, Georgia, Tikeithra Horton (Tony) of Perry, Georgia, Chad Boddie (April) of Huntsville, Alabama, Theron Johnson of Coleman, Florida, and Isiah Johnson of Wedowee, Alabama; a sister, Virginia Neely of Roanoke, Alabama; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
