In Loving Memory Of Mr. Amos Lee Foster
Amos Lee Foster was born to the parentage of the late Mr. & Mrs. Huey Denver Foster and Lelar (Garrett) Foster in Woodland, Randolph County, Alabama on August 22, 1927. His family of origin included thirteen (13) siblings, of which seven (five brothers and two sisters) preceded him in death: Sam Henry Foster, Alfred Lee Foster, Edward Foster, James Foster, Willie B. Foster, Jurileen Foster, and Laura Hattie Foster.
At an early age, he joined Wehadkee Missionary Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful member throughout his life. He was always ready to serve wherever he was needed... Always ready to help someone in need. He also joined and worked with the NAACP during the civil rights era, when the NAACP was a very strong and much needed organization in the community.
Amos devoted his best years working locally in the textile industry at Wehadkee Yarn Mills, where he worked for many years in the warehouse, and as a truck driver. Although he left the area for short periods of time to live other places, such as St. Petersburg, Florida, Amos would always find his way back home to Roanoke. Over the years, Amos also worked at Randolph County Courthouse, supervising inmates, and worked on the polls.
On September 11, 1948, he married the late Julia Ann Bell, and together they birthed and raised eleven children -- seven (7) girls and four (4) boys. Julia preceded him in death September 8, 1978. He later married Oceilia Glenn of Alexander City, Alabama.
Amos' children remember him as a strong father figure in the home; and a man who stood up for what he believed in; a great example of generosity, love, and kindness. When he would raise his garden, he was always ready to with others... often inviting them to partake of his harvest without charge. On Sunday, April 8, 2018, God closed his eyes and summoned him home to rest from labor.
Amos was also preceded in death by two (2) sons, Sam Henry Foster and William Edward Taylor; two (2) daughters: Laura Jean Foster, and Jacqueline Foster Williams; three (3) sons-in-law Ronald Ware, Sr., Tyrone Williams, and Jessie Houston; and one (1) daughter-in-law, Beulah Nolan.
He leaves to cherish many fond and loving memories: five (5) daughters: Caroline Foster Ware, Bathsheba Ann Foster Cook (Roy), Cathy Foster Hardnett (Douglas) of Roanoke, Gloria Foster (Trent Story), and Shontella Foster, all of Roanoke, Alabama, and Brenda Foster Williams of St. Petersburg, Florida; three (3) sons: Amos Foster, Jr., Lorenzo Dale Foster (Kenya) and Jeffrey Foster (Tricia) all of Roanoke, Alabama; one (1) son-in-law Reverend Bruce Williams, of Birmingham, Alabama; and two daughters-in-law, Belinda Taylor and Cynthia Foster; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; two (2) great-great grandchildren; four (4) children that he raised as his own: Bonnie Taylor, Bobby Ray Taylor (Judy) and Essie Ruth Birmingham (Danny) all of Roanoke, Alabama; four (4) sisters: Judy Williams, Peggy Flemming, and Doris Evans of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Lelar Williams of Roanoke, Alabama; one (1) brother, George Foster of Crystal River, Florida; and finally, but not least -- a Great host of other loving relatives and friends.
