It is with very heavy hearts that we must share with deepest regret, the heartbreaking news that our mother, Michalyn fondly known as "Necee" has departed from us and is now at rest with the Lord. "Necee" was the center of all our lives; and we are grateful to God for giving us a mother who lived to see all of us grown, and living on our own. God gave us many opportunities to enjoy having her with us. For that we are indeed grateful. We thank the entire community for their love and prayers bestowed upon us during this very difficult time of loss. Details to follow...
Michalyn was born July 11, 1953, in Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama to the parentage of the late (Mr. & Mrs.) William Moses Winston and Minnie Bell (Rowland) Winston. She was the youngest child born to this parentage. She was part of a very large, and musically gifted and talented family — long admired for their musical ability. Her mother, the late Mrs. Minnie Bell Winston, served as a pianist for Bethel United Methodist Church for many years. Her mother often showcased her children and grandchildren by offering uplifting and inspirational music for worship services and other church events.
As a young child, Michalyn grew up attending Bethel United Methodist Church, where she remained a member until her transition.
As a pre-teen and later a teenager Michalyn was probably best known for her amazing dancing skills. Growing up in East Roanoke during the 1960's, when everybody was star-struck by James Brown, the Temptations, The Supremes, and other great performers, she could learn every new dance step that came out; and could beat everybody else, doing it. She would always be the first person who could demonstrate the latest dance... Then she would teach the rest of us.
As a student, Michalyn enjoyed the best of both worlds... From time to time, she would join her elder siblings in Cleveland, Ohio, and then return home to East Roanoke. As most neighborhood youngsters, she attended the historic Randolph County Traning School (R.C.T.S.) here in Roanoke and Glennville High School in Cleveland, Ohio matriculating with the Class of 1971; She performed as a Majorette with the historic R.C.T.S. Bulldog Band, and was a member of Beta Club, while attending Glennville High School.
Taking time out for what really mattered most, Michalyn made the best of her years on earth. Throughout life, she got great joy out of cooking, singing, dancing, listening to music, doing her makeup; collecting perfumes, spending time with her grand-children and great-grandchildren, and enjoying time with her friends.
Michalyn was preceded in death by: her parents, William and Minnie Bell (Rowland) Winston; a son, Corey Winston "Dube"; most recently her three (3) great-grandsons: Sa'Kai, Sa'Kani, and Sa'Kori Parker — adorable triplet babies, who were born and transitioned together; and siblings: Edith Thomas and Aaron Winston. On Sunday morning, April 28, God in his all-wise providence, dispatched his angels to bring her to her resting place prepared just for her. Surely, that mystical journey made it possible for her to be reunited with her father, mother, son, and great-grand babies. What a REUNION it must have been!!
Michalyn was very much loved and supported by many, and gave so many beautiful smiles to the world; she will be deeply missed by our entire community. A storehouse of special moments and memories will remain with: her son, Demetrius Winston (Yikeisha) of Roanoke; three (3) daughters: LaTanya Winston, Shannetta Winston Reese (Terrance), and LaTasha Winston, all of Roanoke; her grandchildren: Dameion, Juantavious, Shianna, T'Coriyah, Shakiyah, Marquiria, De'Niya, and Paris; her siblings: Martha Thomas of Cleveland, OH, Evelyn "Jeanette" Baker (Grover) of Roanoke; Donald Winston (Christine) of Fairburn, GA; and Cynthia Bell of Roanoke; eight (8) great-grandchildren: Ajah, La'Dyah, Samiria, Zayvian, Messiah, Ni'Ziyah, Makai, and Leilani; her special friend of forty-two (42) years, Jeffery Few special friends: Diane Phillips and Carolyn Goss; a special niece, Linda Thomas and special nephews, Andre Winston, and Donald Houston; Goddaughter, Teshashyta Foster-Wood and finally, but certainly not least, a HOST of other loving kin — neighbors, and friends, who will miss her deeply.
