To all our family and friends in the Historic East Roanoke Community:
It is with great sadness that our families must announce the passing from this life, of Roanoke native, Mrs. Mary Lois (Pogue) Rowland, 75, a long-time resident of 440 Rebecca Lane. We are heartbroken to have to bear this sad news of our loss. Thanks to everyone in our community for all the sympathy and concern shown during a most distressing and difficult time.
Mary Lois Pogue Rowland was born in Roanoke, Alabama on May 31, 1949 to the parentage of the late Lois Pogue. She was raised in the Christian home of her grandparents, Hop and Lilian Pogue, and grew up in the Historic East Roanoke Community.
Shortly after completing her education at the Historic Randolph County Training School (R.C.T.S.), she moved to Atlanta, Georgia where she accepted a job at Leman’s Beauty Shop. She often spoke of how she enjoyed her time there. Later, she moved back to her hometown and accepted a position at Candlewick Yarns, where she worked for over thirty years until she retired. A life-long member of the East Roanoke Pure Holiness Church of God, she served in many capacities, singing as a harmonious lead vocalist in the choirs, working as a staff member of the annual Vacation Bible School and most recently as one of the faithful Mothers of the Church. She also enjoyed gardening, shopping and spending time with her large extended family.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Cora Jean Carter and her nephew, Earl Pogue.
Left to cherish her loving memory are one sister, Mary Jones of Roanoke, AL; two brothers, Blake Foster of Atlanta, GA and William Foster of Roanoke, AL; cousins raised as siblings, Timothy Wright, Catherine Hines, Barbara Wright and Rodney Wright, all of Roanoke, AL; one God-daughter, Tammy Denise Wise of Chattanooga, TN; two special friends, Jerri Ann Dean and Candy Rowland, a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great, great-nieces and great, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
