The Hill and Collins families of Roanoke are deeply saddened to announce that our precious mother and grandmother, Mary Jeanette Hill, an awesome mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and beloved friend, passed from this life on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at her residence in Roanoke. During this time of loss we humbly solicit your support and prayers, and express our heartfelt thanks in advance to all those who have already reached out to us.
Mary Jeanette Collins was born In Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama to the parentage of the late Woodroe Wilson Collins, and Jessie Mae Satterwhite. She grew up in the historic East Roanoke community, attending the First Baptist Church; and the Historic Randolph County Training School (R.C.T.S.).
Mary's family of origin consisted of three (3) boys and three (3) girls: Wilson Collins, Jr., Walter Collins, deceased, Jimmy Collins of Roanoke; Julia Ruth Smith, deceased, and Diane Collins of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Mary married the late Samuel Hill, with whom she engendered seven (7) children: three preceding her in death; and four surviving her. Her predeceased children were Barbara Hill, Donnie Hill, and Karen Hill. Her surviving children include: James Hill, Kenneth Benard Hill and Tiffany Hill, all of Roanoke, and Pamela Hill (Tim) of Wadley.
Mary could be best described as a "do-er." During her younger years, she genuinely enjoyed working as a housekeeper/homemaker, and baby-sitter. Even after she passed active working years, she continued to enjoy homemaking, and baby-sitting. Mary was a "natural" when it came to caring for children, and homemaking. She really enjoyed performing tasks like cleaning, ironing, and raising kids — making sure they were properly taken care of. She also enjoyed cooking; watching stories on television like "General Hospital" and "Days Of Our Lives." Mary also enjoyed listening to blues music, and watching Dallas Cowboy's football.
Bringing an end to an uphill journey which included illness, and the recent loss of other loved ones, God in his all-wise providence rescued Mary from her worldly cares. He dispatched his compassionate angels to come and bring her to her eternal home in heaven. A place of unending joy, where she now enjoys an intimacy with God she could NEVER have on earth!
Aside from her immediate family, Mary has left behind a special friend, Mr. Curtis Joiner of Roanoke; "Ed" the mailman; and Ms. Sarah Nunn; a very special and devoted cousin, Mrs. Edna Mae Blakes of Roanoke; her fourteen (14) beloved grandchildren which include: five (5) granddaughters: LaQuale Trammell and Kenya McFarland (Eugene) both of Roanoke; Kiara Hill of Columbus, Ciaria Bell (Alex) of Heflin; and Victoria Oliver of Phenix City; six (6) grandsons: Christopher Hill of Lafayette, Jeremy Satterwhite of Five Points; Tony Hill, Michael Patillo, and Demarius Stevens all of Roanoke, Timothy Marable of Wadley; and finally, twenty-six (26) great-grandchildren; three (3) great- great-grandchildren; a great host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. The entirety of our community will miss Mary. We pray God's blessings upon her family — and pray that she will rest in peace and power throughout eternity.
