It is with our deepest regret that we inform you of the passing from this life of Mrs. Mamie Lee Hines, 96, a long-time resident of the historic East Roanoke Community, Roanoke, Alabama currently residing at Traylor Retirement Community, 1235 Yancey Street, in Roanoke.
Mamie Lee Hines was the youngest of five (5) siblings -- born December 7, 1924, to the parentage of the late Tollie Wilkerson and Emma (Crowder) Wilkerson in Chambers County, Alabama in a settlement called "Hickory Flat." She was preceded in death by brothers: John Oscar Wilkerson, Fred Ellis Wilkerson, Mallie Wilkerson and; her only sister: Minnie Clyde Wilkerson.
She married the late Henry Clay Hines and their union gave rise to a daughter and son.
During her productive years, Mrs. Mamie offered her professional services as a domestic worker in private homes, the public school, and the health care industry. She worked for J.H. Owens, Knight Enloe Elementary School Lunchroom, and Traylor's Nursing Home.
Mrs. Hines was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Roanoke, where she served as the Church Financial Secretary and worked with the Matrons Department. She continued to work out her soul salvation as a member of First Baptist Church until she reached the stage of decline, and began limiting her activities.
Mrs. Mamie Hines was a beloved member of historic East Roanoke as well as a community mother who will be deeply missed by all of those who remember her many years as part of the African American villages of our community... having resided on Government Street, Seymour Drive, and lastly, Schuessler Street in Roanoke.
Ms. Hines peacefully transitioned from this life on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 -- a mere fifteen days after her 96th birthday -- at Traylor Retirement Community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hines family which includes her daughter: Patricia Parker (James, Jr.) and son, Donnie Hines, both of Roanoke, Alabama; three (3) step-sons: Elton Hines, Michael Gates, and Henry Clay Hines, Jr.; five (5) step-daughters: Cynthia Thorpes, Connie Young, Shirley Garner, Franchesca Hines Guellett, and Alfreda Morris; five (5) grandchildren: Tracy Rice, Leslie Hines, Krissy Byrdsong, Cordarious Clay Hines, and Llewellyn Andrew Hines; fourteen (14) great-grandchildren; and seven (7) great-great-grandchildren; three (3) nieces: Lena Preston of Vacaville, CA, Varie Thomas of Riverdale, GA, and Evelyn Higgins of Chattanooga, TN; one nephew, Reverend Otis Wilkerson of Roanoke, AL; and finally many other relatives and friends.
