Maggie Owensby Obituary

It is with our deepest and heartfelt sympathy that we announce the passing from this life of Mrs. Maggie Lois Owensby, age 90, a resident of 1540 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Roanoke.  Mrs. Owensby transitioned from this life Saturday, March 6, 2021, at her residence in Roanoke.

Maggie Lois (Hooks) was born on April 9, 1930 to the parentage of the late Claire Hooks Berry in Chambers County, Alabama.  She was raised by her grandparents, the late Tom and Dora Hooks.  Maggie attended Chambers County Schools.

On November 8, 1952, at age 22, Maggie united in marriage with Mr. Author James Owensby fondly known as "Jay."  Their union was fruitful, giving rise to thirteen (13) children. Maggie was preceded in death by four (4) of her children.  In keeping with their marriage vows, she and "Jay" remained together over 68 years -- until separated by Maggie's death on Saturday.

Maggie joined Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member until advancing age and declining health would no longer permit.

During her lifetime, Maggie worked for more than 20 years in the healthcare field as a Nurses Assistant at the Traylor Nursing Home (Now, Traylor Retirement Community).

Maggie was preceded in death by her mother, Claire Hooks Berry; her grandparents who raised her: Tom and Dora Hooks; mother-in-law and father-in law: Harvey and Carrie Owensby; one (1) daughter: Mary Howell; three (3) sons: Harvey Owensby, Ricky Owensby, and Joseph Owensby; two (2) brothers: Jasper Berry and W.B. Berry; and finally two (2) sisters: Ella Mae Berry and Dora Mae Berry.   After walking with the Lord for 90 years, she peacefully transitioned from this life on Saturday morning, March 6, 2021 at her home on MLK Drive in Roanoke.

Maggie was loved, supported and will be deeply missed by her large family of children, surviving siblings and compassionate caregivers for whom we are all very grateful.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Owensby family which includes her devoted husband, Arthur James "Jay" Owensby of Roanoke, AL; five (5) sons: Willie Ray Owensby, Billy Owensby, and Reginald Owensby all of Roanoke, AL and Larry Owensby (Lesia) and Christopher Owensby, Sr. both of Jacksonville, FL; four (4) daughters: Margert Wright (Lorenzia) of Fayetteville, NC; Barbara Driver of Roanoke, AL, Betty Owensby of Griffin, GA and Shirley Langston of Austell, GA;  one (1) brother, Ocie Applebee; three (3) sisters: Maime Berry, Betty Jane Berry, and Tommie Lou Turman; her devoted care givers to whom the entire family is eternally grateful: Terrell Johnson, Nicole Howard, Amedisys Home Health, Compassus Hospice, and her children; and three (3) very special friends: her cousin Retha Mae Hooks, and her sister-in-law, Betty Joiner of Roanoke, and Virgil Holt; thirty-one (31) grandchildren; twenty-eight (28) great-grandchildren; three (3) great-great-grandchildren; and finally but not least of all a host of other kindred and friends.
