In Loving Memory of Deacon John William Higgins
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
Deacon John William Higgins, a beloved member of the Roanoke community, peacefully entered eternal rest at his residence on Saturday, May 3, 2025. The son of the late Andrew Lee Higgins, and Catherine (Heath) Higgins, he was 68 years old.
Born on July 31, 1956, at Knight Sanitorium in Roanoke, John was a lifelong resident of Randolph County and a proud graduate of Handley High School. He was known throughout the area as a quiet yet mighty man of faith, compassion, and steadfast dedication to God, his family, and his community.
Deacon Higgins served faithfully as a long-time Deacon at Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Roanoke. His walk with Christ was evident in how he lived his life — with humility, integrity, and a servant’s heart. His steady presence, warm smile, and heartfelt prayers brought comfort to many, both within his church and beyond.
John dedicated more than a decade of his working years to Tyson Foods, where he was employed in food production. He also contributed to the community as a skilled construction worker, known for his strong hands and honest work ethic. Whether laboring on a job site or lending a helping hand to a neighbor, John did all things with pride and purpose.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine Heath Higgins, his father, Andrew Lee Higgins, his siblings Jesse Higgins, Placidia Higgins, and Mary C. Watson, and a beloved son by marriage, Terry Hooks.
Deacon Higgins is survived by his loving wife, Andra Hooks Higgins, to whom he was a steadfast companion. Though they shared no biological children, John lovingly embraced Andra’s children as his own and cherished them deeply:
Reggie Hooks (LaKeisha) of Roanoke, Damian Hooks of Roanoke, Andrew Hooks (Latoya) of Roanoke, Tiffany Beaty (Rodney) of Valley, Tedra Hooks (Anton) of Lanett, and Nedra Hooks of Roanoke. He also leaves behind his cherished sister, Christine Higgins of Roanoke, who remained a constant support throughout his life.
Though his earthly journey has come to a close, Deacon Higgins's spiritual legacy lives on in the lives of those he loved, guided, and prayed for.
The Homegoing Celebration for Deacon Higgins will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at 1:00 P.M. at Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Roanoke, Alabama, with Reverend Robert Heflin serving as Eulogist and Reverend Rickey Cofield officiating. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Clark Memorial Funeral Service.
Interment will follow at Rock Mills Baptist Church Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest near his loved ones, including his niece, Tameka Higgins.
The family expresses their deepest gratitude for the many prayers, visits, and expressions of love extended during this time of loss. May his memory continue to inspire faith, service, and love in all who knew him.
