"He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live ..." (John 11:25)
Deacon John E. Hendricks was born November 24, 1926 to the parentage of the late John and Florency Hendricks.
Early in life, he confessed Christ and joined Wehadkee Baptist Church in Roanoke, where he faithfully and dutifully served until declining health would no longer permit him to serve.
In 1956, John united in marriage with the former Miss Katie Chappell and this union was blessed by the birth of three children, Gregory, Chris, and Terita.
He served our grateful nation as an enlisted member of the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged.
A career educator, John received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Tuskegee Institute. He was a dedicated employee of the Randolph County School System, where he taught for 35 years as a Coach, Principle, Vocational-Agriculture Instructor.
His gift for teaching transcended from the school into his Church life, where he inspired his class with humility, Godly wisdom and insight as a Sunday School teacher for 55 years. He also served as Chairman of the Deacon Board and President of the Church Choir.
Having been blessed to walk the walk of faith for 82 years, John departed this life on Friday, April 17, 2009 at his home in Roanoke, Alabama. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Florency Hendricks, five brothers and two sisters and three great grandchildren, Terita Lavon, Jamia, ande Dakari.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and faithful friend, Deacon John E. Hendricks was loved, supported and will be deeply missed by many, but none more than his devoted wife, Mrs. Katie Hendricks; three children: Gregory Hendricks, Chris Hendricks (Georgia), and Terita Staples (Tommy); seven grandchildren: Latoya, Chris, Wendell, Yashia, Amanda, Lamar and Johnathan; five great grandchildren: Aquemini (Pooh Bear), Latoria, Markylin, imani (Lacy as he would say) Znyiya — all of Roanoke, Alabama; one brother, Theodore Hendricks (Mammie Joe) of Atlanta, Georgia; a special niece, Ann Brown of Decatur, Georgia; a special nephew Sylvester Hendricks (Bo Bo) of Anniston, Alabama; a special cousin, Carrie E. Jones — all of Roanoke; and finally a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving relatives and friends.
Tribute From The Family
God saw you getting tired,
And a cure was not to be
So He put His arms around you
And whispered, "Come With Me."
With tearful eyes, we watched you
Slowly fade away
Although we loved you dearly
We would not make you stay
A golden heart stopped beating
Your hard-working hands put to rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.
