In Loving Memory of Mr. Joe Eddie Joiner, 85
Mr. Joe Eddie Joiner, age 85, of Evanston, Illinois, formerly of Roanoke, Alabama, peacefully departed this life on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Alpine Care of Evanston, following an extended illness.
Mr. Joiner was born on February 4, 1941, in the Five Points community of Chambers, Alabama, to the late John Henry Johnson and Annie Ray Freeman. During his early childhood, his mother married Henry Joiner, who lovingly reared him as his own and later legally adopted him while serving in the United States Military, ensuring that Joe would have access to the benefits afforded to military families. Out of deep love and respect, Joe embraced the Joiner name, honoring the man he knew as father.
Joe’s formative years were rooted in Chambers County, where he attended Uthermal Community School in the Rehope Community and later Phillips High School in Five Points, Alabama.
At the age of 18, driven by courage and determination, Joe joined other young Black men in leaving the South in search of greater opportunity. His journey led him first to Atlanta, GA, and ultimately to Evanston, IL, where he would build a life and legacy spanning more than 58 years.
On November 23, 1974, Joe was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Ms. JoAnn Jackson, in Detroit, Michigan. Their union, rooted in love and devotion, has endured for 52 beautiful years.
Professionally, Joe held various positions before finding his calling in public education. He faithfully served for over 32 years as Lead Gym Custodian at Evanston Township High School. There, he became a beloved figure among students and staff alike, earning the affectionate nickname “Papa Joe” for his warmth, wisdom, and genuine care for others.
In adulthood, Joe was blessed with the opportunity to connect with his biological father, John Henry Johnson, further expanding his family circle and deepening the bonds he cherished so dearly.
A man of enduring faith, Joe maintained a lifelong connection to Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church in Roanoke, Alabama, grounding his life in Christian values and quiet devotion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Ray (Freeman) Joiner and Henry Joiner; his biological father, John Henry Johnson; his brother, Roy Lee Joiner; a sister, Gloria Perry; and finally a "brother-in-love" Bishop Earl J. Wright, Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 52 years, Mrs. JoAnn Joiner of Evanston, IL; sisters: Rosie Mae Treadwell of Atlanta, GA, Valerie Harris (Edward) of Athens, GA, Brenda Joiner Samuels of Fairburn, GA, Carol Parker (William) of Detroit, MI, and Elaine Wright of Rochester Hills, MI; brothers: Leon Neal (Kathy) and Lee Neal (Vicky) of Southfield, MI, and John Henry Johnson, Jr. (Sanae) of Jacksonville, FL; his beloved goddaughter, Tramell Carter Weeks (David) of Jackson, Mississippi; two loving sisters-in-law: Harriet Jean Sims of Farmington Hill, MI, and Margaret Elaine Jackson of Detroit, MI; and finally a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
In a heartfelt tribute, his goddaughter, Tramell Carter Weeks, beautifully reflected on his life, stating:
“Joe’s remarkable life was a testament to his generosity, kindness, and unwavering dedication to others. Though he may be gone, his legacy will continue to inspire and uplift generations to come. Rest on, Papa Joe—you will be greatly missed.”
