James Chappell, Jr. Obituary

It is with our deepest heartfelt sympathy that we advise you of the passing from this life of Mr. James Chappell, Jr., 83, a resident of 778 County Road 213, Wedowee, Alabama 36278.  Mr. Chappell transitioned from this life on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at his residence in Wedowee.

For the convenience and benefit of Mr. Chappell's family, we are asking all those who wish to post a condolence or message of sympathy, PLEASE do so using the "Guest Book Page", which WE have set up to record his condolences, memories and sentiments.

James (Jim) Chappell, Jr. was born in Wedowee, Alabama on November 7, 1936 to the parentage of the late James (Jim) Chappell, Sr., and Bernice (Robertson) Chappell.  He was the fifth of eight children born to this parentage.  At an early age, he accepted Christ and joined Zion Rest Baptist Church in Wedowee, where he grew up singing in the church choir with his cousin Thomas Johnson.

James attended public schools in Wedowee.  Afterward, he left Randolph County and relocated to Atlanta in pursuit of employment.  He remained in the Atlanta area for forty-eight years.  During his stay in Atlanta, James worked for Mead Paper Company as a Paper Cutter and General Tire & Rubber Company as a Forklift Driver for twenty-six years.

Jim, Jr. was married to Josephine (Baker) Chappell. To this union two children were born: Stanley Joe Chappell of Atlanta GA who preceded him in death and Vikki Denise Chappell Holloway (Randolph) of Stockbridge, GA; and one granddaughter, Simone E. Leonard (Jessie) of Washington DC. It was always Jim Jr’s heart’s desire to move back home to Wedowee, AL.  In 2004 he was able to fulfill that desire and enjoyed every moment of living on the home site of his growing up years. He loved keeping his lawn groomed, music and his 1999 Dodge Ram truck. He enjoyed watching the old western shows on TVLand... "Gun Smoke" and "Rifle Man" were his favorites.  Moreover, he had a fondness for animals, particularly non-pedigreed dogs, which most of us call would call "mutts."  Jim, Jr. had a smile that could brighten up any room.

James was preceded in death by siblings: Gracie Marie Joiner of Los Angeles, CA, and Curtis Mae Green of Wedowee, and an infant sister, Jimmie Lee Chappell.  On Thursday, March 19, God in his all wise providence saw fit to take James away from this mortal life and transition him to his eternal home on high, where we are sure he experienced a divine reunion with his departed son, Stanley, along with his predeceased siblings-- Grace, Curtis Mae, Jimmie Lee, and finally, his father James, Sr., and mother, Bernice.

At this most difficult time, our sympathies and prayers are extended to his family which includes: his wife of sixty-four years, Mrs. Josephine Baker Chappell of Wedowee, daughter, Vikki Holloway (Randolph) of Stockbridge, GA; granddaughter, Simone E. Leonard (Jessie); four (4) sisters: Mable Louise Smith, and Shirley Izora Sims of Wedowee, AL; Katie Ruth Hendricks of Roanoke, AL, and Barbara Ann Summerville of Lithonia, GA; and finally but not least, a host of extended family which includes many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends.

Jim Jr.'s family is eternally grateful to nephews Timothy Green and Marcus Northington their unselfish care-giving service and all family and friends who helped in any way. Also the family acknowledges Clearview Cancer Institute of Anniston, AL, Amedisys Home Health Services, Roanoke, AL and Compassus Hospice Palliative Care.
