Eddie Baker Obituary

We are saddened to announce the passing from this life of our beloved cousin, neighbor and friend, Mr. Eddie Robert Baker (aka "Doo-Baby"), 69, a resident of 434 Government Street, Roanoke, Alabama. Mr. Baker transitioned from this life on Monday evening, March 27, 2017, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, Alabama.

Mr. Baker will be available for viewing on Thursday, March 30, 2017 from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm. He will be in state at the church the following day, from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm.

Funeral Services for Mr. Baker will be observed on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 1:00 PM from the First Baptist Church, 549 Riley Street, Roanoke, Alabama, with Reverend Gilbert Staples, Pastor, Officiating, and Reverend William R. Terry serving as Eulogist. Burial will follow in Wehadkee Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, 1216 County Road 310, Roanoke, Alabama.

Pall Bearers will include: Members of Shawmut Lodge #165, Lanett, Alabama;
Honorary Pall Bearers will be Cousins.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF EDDIE ROBERT BAKER

Eddie Robert Baker was born in Graham (Randolph County), Alabama, on October 12, 1948, to the parentage of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Benjamin and the late LaVada (Gates) Baker. He was the oldest of five children born to this union. He grew up in the "Springfield" community.

At an early age, he joined the Rock Mills Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of his uncle, the late Reverend Jim Frank Baker. He remained a member of Rock Mills until his home going.

He attended the historic Randolph County Training School, graduating with the Class of 1966. After graduating, he resided in Saginaw, Michigan for several years. While residing in Saginaw, Eddie worked for General Motors. He later returned home to Alabama. On June 10, 1989, he united in marriage with Ms. Mary Morgan. Eddie went to work for J.B. Hunt Transportation, and worked 25 years, as a long-distance truck driver. He truly enjoyed this work. Upon retirement in 2015, he was honored with an all-expense paid trip, a retirement dinner, and awards for his years of service. After retirement, he continued to relish the joy of driving, by offering his services as a taxi.

He was an active member of the Shawmut Lodge #165 and the Khedive Temple #3 Shriners, in Lanett, Alabama.

Eddie was preceded in death by his mother, LaVada Baker, with whom he reunited on Monday, March 27, 2017, when he departed this life at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. He will always be remembered for being a sharp dresser.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Baker of Roanoke, Alabama; ; five (5) children: Michelle Joiner (George) of LaGrange, Georgia, Donna Nelson and Jason Nelson both of Roanoke, Alabama, Sonya Nelson of New York, New York, and Brian Nelson of Fayetteville, Georgia; his father Eddie Benjamin Baker also of Roanoke, Alabama; one brother, Bobby Gene Baker of Lanett, Alabama; three (3) sisters: Lizzie Gregg, Margaret Grady and Deborah Chisolm; two (2) sisters-in-law: Sharon Whetstone and Esther Morgan; two (2) brothers-in-law: John Frank Morgan, and Bobby Morgan, all of Roanoke. six (6) grandchildren: Jada Nelson, Dontavious Joiner, Jakavian Nelson, Jabarri Neslon, Angel Nelson, and Tequila Staples; and finally but not least, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.
