It is with our deepest and heartfelt sympathy that we inform you of the passing from this life of Mrs. Doris (Allen) Thompson, age 89, a resident of 767 Reed Circle, Roanoke, AL. Mrs. Doris Thompson transitioned from this life on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at her residence in Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama.
Doris was one of six children -- born in Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama on January 2, 1931 to the parentage of the late Reverend Dewitt Allen, Sr. and Mrs. Rosie Lee (Poole) Allen. Other siblings -- now deceased -- born into this parentage included the late Reverend Rocelius Allen, Josephine Freeman, Mary Emily Watts and Dewitt Allen, Jr.
As the children of a well-known pastor (The Reverend Dewitt Allen, Sr.), the Allen family committed their lives to Christ, and joined Rocky Mount United Methodist Church in Roanoke, a once-thriving congregation consisting of many loyal families in the Broughton Community. Doris remained a member of Rocky Mount throughout her life, faithfully serving over her many years as a Sunday-School teacher, youth advisor, Vice President of United Methodist Women, Treasurer, and Communion Stewardess. As she matured into her senior years, she was recognized as "Mother Of the Church".
Doris will long be remembered as a great cook, whose specialties included her delicious dressing. Throughout the years, everybody in the family would "make their way home" to enjoy her wonderful family dinners. Doris was also known for her "green thumb" that could grow anything.
She graduated from the historic Randolph County Training School, and devoted several years to serving as a Substitute Teacher at Rocky Mount School.
The love of her life was the late Rufus Thompson, who she wed and remained married to for fifty-one years. Together, she and Rufus had seven children (three sons, and four daughters), whom they both lived to see grow into mature adults. Rufus preceded her to heaven on May 1, 2008.
God blessed Doris to live a long busy life -- putting in her time as a faithful wife -- a loving mother and grandmother -- a Christian woman and a faithful servant of God. As Doris' health began to decline, people from her church would come to her house for singing and bible study. It could well be said of her, as in 2 Timothy 4:7-8 that "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."
During this most difficult time, we pray for God's comfort for her entire family, including sons: Gregory Thompson (Vivian) of Carrollton, GA, Victor Thompson and Rodney Thompson both of Roanoke, AL; daughters: Brenda Thompson, Alesia Hughley (Johnny), Jackie Heard (Reverend William Heard) and Allison Joiner (Leon) all of Roanoke, AL; her sister, Christine Allen of Detroit, MI; fifteen (15) grandchildren; thirteen (13) great grandchildren; three (3) special nephews: Ronald, Reginald & Larry Allen; and very special caregiver, "Cuddles" Robinson.
