Mrs. Betty Ruth Owensby Joiner was born on October 31, 1935, in Randolph County, Alabama, to the late Harvey G. Owensby and Carrie Bell (Watts) Owensby. She peacefully transitioned from this life on Monday, August 25, 2025, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital in Newnan, Georgia, surrounded by her devoted family.
Raised in Roanoke, Betty was a proud graduate of the historic Randolph County Training School, Class of 1953.
At an early age, she joined Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member until her health no longer allowed her active participation. Over the years, she served diligently as Church Secretary, Deaconess, and President of the Choir. Her presence in the choir stand was a familiar and uplifting sight for countless Sundays, as she lifted her voice in song alongside her fellow choir members. She was also a member of the Lily White Chapter No 352 Order Of The Eastern Star, in Roanoke.
Following high school, Betty was employed for several years at Palm Beach Manufacturing. However, her true passion was nursing. She later pursued her studies at LaGrange College and embarked on a distinguished 30-year career as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the Randolph County Health Department. Prior to that, Betty had devoted ten years and three months to employment at the Randolph County Hospital. Many in the community fondly remember her warm smile, her crisp white uniform, and her unwavering dedication to providing care and comfort.
On December 22, 1956, Betty was united in marriage to the love of her life, the late Robert Joiner, Jr. Their union was blessed with six children: Dianne McLain of Fairburn, GA; Reverend Dr. Michael Joiner (Alfreda), Robert Alton Joiner (Regina), Joseph Lee Joiner, and Casey Adamson (Sasser), all of Roanoke, AL; Anita Hudson (Bruce) of Hampton, GA. Together, Betty and Robert created a home filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert; and her two brothers, Willie Lewis “Snook” Owensby and Arthur James Owensby.
Cherishing her memory are her six children; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; special cousin, Virgilnetta Holt of Atlanta, GA; devoted friends, Carrie Ethel Jones and Nina Taylor, both of Roanoke; dedicated caregivers, Levonia Boyd, Agnes Watkins, Alice Houston, Jennifer Benefield, Sophia Huff, LaTrika Landrum, and Florence Pierre; along with a host of extended family members and friends who will forever hold her in their hearts.
Betty will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, nurse, church servant, and friend whose legacy of faith, compassion, and love lives on in all who knew her
