In Loving Memory Of Deacon Andrew Ellis, Jr.

Andrew Ellis, Jr. was born in LaFayette, Chambers County, Alabama on October 30, 1923 to the parentage of the late Andrew Ellis, Sr. and Naomi (Banks) Ellis. He spent most of his life here in Roanoke, Alabama, where he was known as a pleasant and friendly gentleman, and loved by the community. Andrew enjoyed fishing, eating, and watching wrestling on television.

Andrew's family of origin included several siblings, all except one who preceded him in death. They include brothers: John Henry Ellis, Sr. and William Ellis; and sisters: Suggs B. Strickland, Ivy Joiner, Willie Mae Spence, Nannie Mae Hamilton and Emma Finney; leaving one last surviving brother, Reverend C.L. Ellis (Dollie) of Youngstown, Ohio. Andrew was also preceded in death by a grandson, Xavier Alvarez.

At 21, Andrew entered the United States Army on March 18, 1944 at Fort Benning, Georgia. He served our grateful nation as a Cook's Helper during the World War II era. During his military tour, his Decorations included the APTO Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Having served our grateful nation with valor, he was honorably discharged from the United States Army in May of 1946.

He was a life-long member of Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church in Roanoke, where he served as a member of the Deacon Board. In prior years, he was also involved in the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge here in Roanoke.

Having surpassed others of his generation in years... reaching the venerable age of 95, Andrew transitioned from this life early Friday morning, December 7, 2018 at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, in LaGrange, Georgia.

The fondest of his memories will be cherished by his loving children including two (2) daughters: Sybil Perry and Rebecca Ann Gunn, both of Roanoke, Alabama; and one (1) son, Lorenzo Gunn of Anniston, Alabama...

One (1) niece, Naomi Satterwhite of LaGrange, Georgia; and a great niece, Rosetta Square of Birmingham, Alabama...

Special family friends, the Freeman, Stegall, and Joiner families; special caregiver, Caramel Joiner, James, Joiner and Sharon Henderson...

Finally the family has grown especially fond of additional caregivers, Cecolia Williams and Joyce Beard, who both assisted with Deacon Ellis' care. We are grateful for your compassion and your dedicated service rendered to our father during his waning years.
