Joe Grady, Sr. Obituary

With deepest regret, we announce the passing from this life of Mr. Joe Frank Grady, 85, a resident of 429 Chemical Avenue, Roanoke, Alabama.    Mr. Grady transitioned from this life on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Anniston, Alabama.

Joe Frank Grady, 85 was the oldest sibling born April 2, 1934, in Welch, Chambers County, Alabama, to the parentage of the late Frank Grady, Sr. and Beulah Todd Grady.  His siblings were J.W. Grady, Annie L. Grady Sims and Lamerle Grady, all predeceased.

Joe was married to the former Leanora Ware of Roanoke, Alabama, daughter of the late Ebenezer and Thelma Ware who lived in the historic East Roanoke Community.

He graduated from Five Points High School in Five Points, Alabama and later worked as a Security Guard for Milliken in LaGrange, Georgia.

In the 1950's Joe enlisted in the service at Fort Benning, Georgia.  He served our grateful nation in the United States Army.  His Military Decorations included the National Defense Service Medal with 1 oak leaf cluster; Army Occupational Medal (Germany); Good Conduct Medal 1st through 4th Awards; Vietnam Services Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars; Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device; Sharpshooter Badge (M-14); 2 Overseas Bars;  six (6) Service Stripes.  His last tour of duty was Vietnam.  After 20 years, 8 months and 27 days of dedicated service Joe retired; He ended his 20-year military career with an honorable discharge on July 31, 1974 at Fort Carson, Colorado having achieved a rank of Staff Sergeant.  After his active service years, he worked for 21 more years at the Anniston Army Depot. Finally retiring from the Depot, Joe and Leanora left the Anniston area and returned home to settle in Roanoke.

Upon his return home, Joe joined the Canaan Baptist Church in the Welch Community, where he remained a member until his homegoing this past Saturday.

Joe was preceded in death by an adopted son, Albert Aundra' Grady.  He transitioned from this life on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Anniston, Alabama.

Joe was a fine person, who enjoyed his family, children and grandchildren; one thing he enjoyed most was barbequing -- and he was a great chef.  He gave many smiles to the world, and will be deeply missed by everyone in the East Roanoke Community.

He leaves to cherish many loving memories his wife, Leanora Ware Grady of Roanoke, Alabama; one son, Joe Frank Grady, Jr. of Anniston, Alabama; and a daughter Gwendolyn Grady of Roanoke, Alabama; a special granddaughter, Audejia Royal, his care-giver and with whom he lived during his final days; sixteen (16) grandchildren; ten (10) great-grandchildren; and a host of loving neighbors, relatives and friends.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his widow, Mrs. Leanora Ware Grady of Roanoke; son, Joe Frank Grady, Jr. of Anniston; daughter Ms. Gwendolyn Grady of Roanoke; his 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, many other beloved relatives and friends.  We are praying that the Grady family will find peace and comfort in the midst of this storm.
